Second Research Project with The Soufan Center
March 2022 - The Trustees have made a second grant to the Soufan Center in New York to fund a project on Deterrence & Denial: The Impact of Sanctions & Designations on Violent Far-Right Groups. This project is to deepen understanding about the impact of sanctions and proscriptions on terrorist groups, with a focus on violent far-right actors. Through research, interviews, and consultations with key stakeholders, TSC will assess whether the measures taken by several states – in particular, the U.K., Canada, and other Five Eyes partners – have had the desired impacts, whether on a legal, political, or operational level. To address different dimensions of the issue and offer concrete action-oriented findings and suggestions for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, TSC will produce a series of Issue Briefs and host events to identify key challenges and successes, as well as lessons learned from other counterterrorism sanctions regimes – in particular, those aimed at ISIS and al-Qaeda. The final briefs are expected in Summer 2022.
14 April 2021 - The Trustees have made a grant to the Soufan Center in New York to fund a project on The Transnational Dimensions of Violent Far-Right Extremism In The United States, United Kingdom, and Beyond. The Soufan Center and the Airey Neave Trust are collaborating on a research project to assess transnational dimensions of violent far right and white supremacist extremism, with a particular focus on the United States and the United Kingdom.
The research will focus on the evolution of groups in both contexts, as well as ideological, financial, and operational connections, and gather lessons learned and experiences from governments, practitioners, and experts in addressing such violent groups. Moreover, the research will explore what lessons learned from the last two decades of fighting transnational terrorism might be applied to addressing violent far-right extremism. Data collected for the project will also enhance TSC’s Mapping Insecurity project to reflect the cross-Atlantic and transnational aspects of the violent far-right extremist movement.
